Institute presentation

The Leibniz Research Laboratories for Biotechnology and Artificial Organs (LEBAO) at Hannover Medical School (MHH) are closely linked to the Department of Cardiothoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery at the MHH. Within the LEBAO different aspects of regenerative medicine and organ transplantation are investigated. The close linkage of basic research and the clinic allows for focused research and development, as well as for a fast translation of innovative therapeutic concepts into clinical practice.
The three areas of research at the LEBAO:

  1. Molecular biotechnology & stem cell research
  2. Tissue engineering
  3. Bioartificial lung

Projects in all areas of research aim at the development of new therapies for the treatment of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. The LEBAO is one of the central institutions of the Cluster of Excellence "REBIRTH". Additionally, interconnections and close collaborations with other projects within the MHH as well as with a multiplicity of other national and international scientific institutions and industrial enterprises exist.

Within StemBANCC LEBAO researchers are involved in work package (WP) 3 and 9 and will strengthen controlled scale up of hiPS cell production to provide a reliable cell source for any lineage differentiation (WP 3). Our second area of expertise is the efficient differentiation of hiPSCs into cardiomyocytes and their application for safety pharmacological assays in WP 9.
